Sea buckthorn is a true super food when it comes to health. Studies have shown that the most valuable ingredient of sea buckthorn – sea buckthorn oil – strengthens the mucosa, skin, circulation and general physical condition. The health effects of sea buckthorn oil are known to traditional Chinese medicine. These effects have been confirmed during 40 years of testing in the University of Turku. All clinical western research on sea buckthorn oil has been conducted on Omega-7 sea buckthorn oil manufactured by Aromtech. Plenty of research has been conducted on the natural vitamins, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and plant sterols contained in sea-buckthorn. The sea buckthorn berry is unique in that both its seeds and fruit pulp contain oil. The nutritional value of the sea buckthorn berry is one of a kind. It contains hundreds of different kinds of compounds, the best-known being vitamins A, C, E, F, K and B, carotenoids, flavonoids, biotin, folic acid, and various dietary minerals and trace minerals, as well as valuable fatty acids. The most valuable part of sea buckthorn is its oil, which contains several good fatty acids in glyceride form, such as α-linoleic acid (Omega-3), linoleic acid (Omega-6), oleic acid (Omega-9) and rare Omega-7 fatty acids, such as palmitoleic acid and vaccenic acid.

Several components of sea buckthorn berries and oil act as antioxidants, and they have a proven effect on inflammation. Digesting sea buckthorn oil and berries is a potential nutritional way of treating dry eyes and inflammations. Recent studies have confirmed that the bioactive compounds of sea buckthorn have synergic effects on health. Instead of individual nutrients, the positive effects shown by studies on cardiac health, dry eyes and inflammations are more likely to be the result of the positive joint effects, i.e. synergy, of the compounds in the berries and oil.
